You might think I’m just
a fourteen-year-old girl
with plain-jane brown hair
and bespeckled brown eyes
But I know I am more
way more than that
Not a bird or a bee
nor a breeze whistling through the trees
An ocean
an unexplored ocean
I seem shallow
from the surface,
as if I lack depth,
and my waves,
when they come crashing,
are terrifying to be caught in,
where a person’s feet shall be swept
from beneath them
and they have trouble gaining ground
Yet, to others I am familiar, welcoming, and comforting
My waves lap gently at them,
timid, soothing, constant,
and I allow them to witness my depth,
which is still leagues below even what they can see
and houses creatures some would claim as weird
but others claim as interesting
My waters are sometimes murky
but they usually return to crystal-clear,
calmly extending and receding,
receding and extending
The average brown-haired, brown-eyed girl
is an ocean
a bottomless, breath-taking ocean few will ever get to discover
