Career Choice Comparative Essay

Ever since I can remember, I’ve found people interesting. I blame this on my family, for they introduced me to a strange- if not creepy- way to pass the time when they would drag me out to go shopping. This activity is simply sitting down on a bench or chair in a store or mall and studying the people that are going about their daily lives as if I don’t exist- they’ve dubbed it ‘people watching’.  This fascination with people’s appearance, behavior, or thoughts has grown over time, and I have grown to love helping people. Because of this, I want to enter a career that involves helping, observing, or improving people’s lives. After much thought, I have narrowed down the options until only three remained: psychologist, sociologist, and interior designer.

After taking into consideration salary, versatility, abilities needed, colleges that offer the program, and work schedules, I have decided I would be quite well-suited, and would quite enjoy, being a psychologist, because not only do I find people interesting, but because I am very good at figuring out when something is troubling my friends, family, and even complete strangers and then helping them through the problem that is plaguing their thoughts.

By observing this chart, it is obvious a sociologist can make the most at $129,760, while an interior designer makes the least at $86,900. A sociologist will most likely work full-time during regular business hours, but an interior designer might have to adjust her schedule to fit her client’s schedules and deadlines. Both these careers have good versatility. With sociology, I could enter other fields that interact with people- such as social services or sales and marketing. With interior designing, I could enter other artistic or engineering- such as graphic design.

A psychologist is a nice mix between sociologist and interior designer- income and work hours wise. A psychologist can make up to $110,880, and work full time during regular business hours, or can open up their own firms and set up their own working hours- which I would prefer; however, this is considerably difficult due to the fact that I am going to have to make a name for myself and acquire clients. Versatility wise, I could enter medical, social, law, or other therapeutic fields. Overall, this gives a broad range of opportunities if I decide to change careers. I can, with a slight change in schooling, can enter another career if I decide I am not meant to work as a psychology.

Even though I would make a higher income as a sociologist with the exact hours, and interior design would be a great creative outlet for, I believe psychology better suits my hopes, dreams, and personality.

I’ve always liked to pick people’s minds and help them with the problems they possess. I like to talk out issues and to solve them. To put it peculiarly, I like to ‘fix’ people. I like to put them back together  when they fall apart. I’ve concluded that my so called ‘fixer’ tendency originates from observing my family get in countless confrontations with each other and my desire to please and make people happy.

I believe I already possess  fairly developed communication, reasoning, and interpersonal skills. I would like to think that I have satisfactory observational skills since I can almost always notice when someone might have something troubling them or might be depressed. However, my analytical thinking skills could be considered sorely lacking, and my thinking skills could always use some improvement. All these traits are vital to become an adequate psychologist. Another trait vital for a psychologist is credible and sufficient education. Since I am planning on being in the top ten percent, I am planning on going to a college in Texas. There is a total of 98 colleges in Texas alone that offer  a psychology program of some kind- Baylor, Rice, University of Texas being my top three picks. All three of these  colleges have a respectable reputation and fantastic education programs.

After researching these three careers, I  have come to realize that whether it be at home, in someone’s mind, or in the field collecting statistics , all of these careers revolve around improving someone else’s life. All three invoke problem solving, communication, and interpersonal skills, which I believe I possess in some form or fashion. Therefore, my decision is the one my heart told me to follow- the one that allows me to help improve people’s mental conditions, improve any hidden conditions, and allow me to further my understanding of humans. I truly believe that this is what I am meant to do.

Poem Composition

You might think I’m just

a fourteen-year-old girl

with plain-jane brown hair

and bespeckled brown eyes

But I know I am more

way more than that

Not a bird or a bee

nor a breeze whistling through the trees

An ocean

an unexplored ocean

I seem shallow

from the surface,

as if I lack depth,

and my waves,

when they come crashing,

are terrifying to be caught in,

where a person’s feet shall be swept

from beneath them

and they have trouble gaining ground

Yet, to others I am familiar, welcoming, and comforting

My waves lap gently at them,

timid, soothing, constant,

and I allow them to witness my depth,

which is still leagues below even what they can see

and houses creatures some would claim as weird

but others claim as interesting

My waters are sometimes murky

but they usually return to crystal-clear,

calmly extending and receding,

receding and extending

The average brown-haired, brown-eyed girl

is an ocean

a bottomless, breath-taking ocean few will ever get to discover

Plan for Science Semester Project

Written Activity

I plan on making a word scramble that features the vocabulary of (11)(a), which includes: producer, consumer, predator, prey, parasite, host, and food web. On a second piece of paper I will list the vocabulary and definitions.

Written Evaluation

I will make a test in which the students will have to choose the correct word to fill in the blank.

“Hands-on” activity

I plan on doing a puppet show that will demonstrate the relationships between producer/consumer, predator/prey, and parasite/host within marine, freshwater, and terrestrial ecosystems. My back-up plan is to take a song and redo the lyrics to fit my objective.

Presentation

I will be doing a slide show featuring (11)(a) in this order: definitions, terrestrial ecosystems, marine ecosystems, and freshwater ecosystems.

“To An Athlete Dying Young” by A.E. Housman

” To An Athlete Dying Young” by A.E. Housman has a rhyme scheme of aabb and has 7 stanzas. It is an elegy about an athlete who dies young(hence, the title) and doesn’t get to outlive his glory. Personally, I didn’t really like or enjoy this poem. I think my dislike is because I can’t really relate to the topic of the poem.

Book Review of Goddess of Yesterday

Ever wish you could be someone else? Well it is not that great as anaxandra(an-ex-andra) in The Goddess of Yesterday by Caroline B. Cooney finds out. When lying about who she is turns into a life or death struggle she is going to have to do to keep her loved ones alive.

Anaxandra(“not alexandra a lot of people get it wrong” as it says in the book) is very young when she is taken away from her family and the small island that has no name that they live on. The king that has taken her wants to keep her as a companion to his daughter that is paralyzed from the waist down. A few years later her new home is attacked and she is the only one to survive. A few days later another king finds her by herself on the island and she lies about who she is.When the king takes her back Anaxandra meets Helen.  Helen is the most beautiful woman and when a prince from Troy ,Paris, falls in love with her she goes with him when the king is away.Taking Anaxandra with her by accident and given the responsibility to take care of Helens youngest child Pleis, who she loves like a younger brother. When the king comes to Troy to bring Helen back a war starts , and Helen starts trying to get rid of Anaxandra even if it means her death.

My favorite part of the book was when Paris tried to kill  Pleis with quicksilver ,and Anaxandra saves him (like any heroine would) from being poisoned. She risks her own life because she loves him and I would risk my life for my loved ones.Even if it meant my own defeat.

I would recommend this book for seventh and eighth graders, for both boys and girls. I really loved this book.I would rate it 99 on a scale from 1-100.

The Accidental Movie Star

Ever feel like no one cares about you? In the Accidental Movie Star by Emily Evans, a girl named Ashley Herrington has a lot of those moments while experiencing the chance of a lifetime.

Ashley Herrington  gets a chance of a lifetime to work at a movie studio because of her dad. At the beginning  it states, ”Dad didn’t show up,” (she’s at the airport) and  as the book progresses you get a feeling as if she thinks people don’t care about her, except her best friend (Marissa) and her mom.

During the story she meets another main character ,a superstar name Caspian (Caz). They don’t exactly hit it off ,but quickly become friends. Also, she becomes part of the movie because she was told by the director to get in front of the camera and teaches Caz a thing or two. I can relate to this book because I sometimes feel as if no one cares. I think everyone does.

I loved this book ,and recommend it for teenagers who like a tad bit of romance, mostly for girls.
